The Value of Citations

User-Generated Tags Going Away

The Framework for Information Literacy Sandbox (FILS) Committee has created a new list of high-use topics with definitions to make resources easier to categorize and find. We are moving away from user-generated tags. You can update your tags to these new standardized topics to improve discoverability. User-generated tags are currently hidden and will go away on or after February 28, 2026. Tags are no longer visible publicly, but are still available to contributors in the edit view until February 28, 2026. If you miss this deadline, you can still add topics to your resources, but you won’t be able to see the former tags. If you prefer not to make updates, your resources will still be discoverable by keyword search, discipline, and more. For more information, please reach out to acrlsandbox@gmail.com.

The goal of this assignment is to help students develop a better understanding of the need to provide citations. Moving beyond a focus on citations as giving appropriate credit to an author, this activity is intended to help students appreciate the value of citations for the reader (or scholars in general). Students will review a source without citations and attempt to answer a series of questions, then will discuss/reflect on what the activity contributes to their understanding of how scholars use and value citations.
